“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

  • RIP Dave Brubeck

“For as long as I’ve been playing jazz, people have been trying to pigeonhole me,” he once told the Tribune.

    “Frankly, labels bore me.”

  • Random London Fact of the Day

Courtesy of Londonist

http://londonist.com/2012/12/things-to-do-in-london-today-4-december-2012.php

BBC Television Centre in White City was designed in the late 1950s by Graham Dawbarn. The story goes that, while playing with ideas to fill the triangular plot, he inked in a giant question mark. The typographic doodle turned out to be a fitting design solution, and the studios were built to that shape. When the newsroom was added in the 1990s, it was specifically built into a drum shape to form the dot at the bottom of the question mark.

A great sense of inevitability about this….

  • Strong Opinions @marksbirch: The Question of Scale

    marksbirch:

The team is awesome and the product is great, we are just not sure it can scale.

I often hear some version of this quote from conversations with investors. Just the other day in fact this line came up almost verbatim with a VC partner. Generally I ignore it as some trite brush off of a startup…

    Smart analysis. Worth reading.

  • Does the publishing industry ever go online and read?

There’s so many great ideas out there on how to save the industry and so many wise words on what will happen if they don’t change things around - case in point here

    http://gigaom.com/2012/11/30/sub-compact-media-rethinking-the-way-we-publish-online/

I just think that if they took a look around the world of online news and comment they’d find no shortage of ways forward. Maybe they need an “Idiots Guide”…?

  • Is smartphone journalism the way forward?

“What we see with Hipstamatic and Instagram are images that are obviously filtered, but in the history of photography there has never been such a thing as a pure image”

“Should we at the Guardian reconsider the kind of photography we use?”

I love that my news’paper’ questions itself like this.

  • Windows 8 - Square pegs in square holes please….

Microsoft - spent many years trying to put a desktop OS on a mobile. Now they’re trying to put a tablet OS on the desktop. Go figure…

Ps. Round pegs go in round holes too.
